Staten Island Dreaming
What dreams do passengers recall as they travel? This video introduces an ongoing project with one of my favorite collaborators Camille June Gregoire recording recollections of nocturnal dreams by passengers riding the Staten Island Ferry in New York City. By weaving dreams together, we can see how each night as we sleep we are working our way through a collective social narrative. In order to document these dreams, we ride back and forth on the ferry from South Street Station in Manhattan to Staten Island and back again, speaking with as many passengers as possible. The question we ask people is as follows: Do you have any recurring dreams or a particularly vivid moment from your dreams that stays with you? This video was created to show the concept of the work, which will be a documentary and an installation.
